Fish Health Specialist

The role of Fish Health Specialist is a senior leadership position in the operations team, working alongside and collaboratively the Facilities Manager and Operations Manager, all of whom report directly to the Chief Operating Officer. The Fish Health Specialist will also have some administrative and analytical support (Aquaculture Data Analyst).

The Fish Health Specialist is responsible for all aspects of fish health, including animal welfare, feed and water quality management for our corporate nursery and grow-out facilities, as well as our designated grower farms.

In addition, the Fish Health Specialist is also responsible for all fish health testing (routine and otherwise) including reporting and permitting requirements.

Managerial Requirements

Leadership and mentorship experience building teams at all levels of an organization.

Comprehensive fish health program management compliant with all relevant regulatory and program standards.

Advanced analytics capacity to inform data-based decision-making.

Systems-based management approach based on structured operations (ISO equivalent systems).

Research and Development program experience, including collaboration on priorities and operations of R&D facilities.

Communication of technical and management information to all levels of the organization.

Contribution to the Training and Internal Development Program.

Technical Requirements

Leading fish health and welfare programs in intensive aquaculture operations.

Understanding of land-based recirculating aquaculture systems, and related fish health and welfare.

Completing technical / analytical research, and communicating the results thereof, as part of a structured research and development program.

Adhering to the VeroBlue Farms operational procedures and HACCP manuals.

Completing other similar and related duties.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift at least 40 lbs numerous times during a given working shift, both in static (i.e. feed) and dynamic loads (i.e. netted live fish).

Ability to stand on feet for more than 4 consecutive hours.

Performing duties in a warm and humid environment.

Working in a manner that maintains the overall safety and operational efficiency of the work environment.

Qualification and Experience Requirements

University or college degree, preferably graduate degree, and/or suitable work experience in aquaculture and/or fisheries.

5 plus years of progressive leadership experience in positions focused on fish health and welfare.

Specific experience working in aquaculture required, with some experience with either, or both, of research and development, and land-based systems considered to be a significant asset.

Experience working with Barramundi and Salmonids preferred.


Position based out of Webster City, Iowa, with travel required to all for the VeroBlue Farms corporate and designated grower farms.

Set weekly work schedule, including rotating coverage for weekends.

Salaried position with compensation based on qualifications and experience. Success-based bonus and incentive plan.
